Calella de Palafrugell is a small town located on the Costa Brava. The origin of its inhabitants date back to the 18th century, when the danger of attacks by pirates started to disappear and the fishermen who lived inland were able to settle down by the seaside. This neighbourhood of the Palafrugell municipality based its sustenance on fishing practically until the 1950s, when the progressive influx of tourists changed the way of living of its inhabitants, as it happened all over the coast.
Unlike other seafaring towns, whose environment has been severely damaged by uncontrolled building, the old nucleus of Calella de Palafrugell has kept its traditional appearance, respecting the layout of its first streets and many of the old fishermen’s houses. Most of them have been converted into summer homes. The highest point of the town center is, as it used to be, the church belfry and is a very significant indicator.
The Calella de Palafrugell coast is composed of small creeks and reddish rocks with pine trees literally touching the sea. The Illes Formigues (ant islands), so called because their outline suggests the shape of these little insects, are the symbol of identity of its horizon. As for the town itself, we cannot avoid talking about its "Voltes" (arcades), the old meeting point of the local fishermen, the Port Bo square which every summer hosts the renowned Havanera Concert, or the Canadell promenade built at the end of the 19th century when spending the summer by the seaside became a fashion.
But Calella de Palafrugell is not only this, summer and beach. When you can most admire its scenery is during the off-peak season, even though each season has its charm. In any case, the contrast between the calm winter and the activity of the summer months makes this place attractive for all kinds of preferences.
